Goodbye Post: Reflecting on AI in English Language Teaching

As this term ends, I want to thank you for joining me on this journey exploring AI in English language teaching. It’s been an exciting and thought-provoking experience!

The course excelled in demonstrating AI’s potential to enhance language learning through tools like chatbots, adaptive learning platforms, and content generation. However, its main weakness was the limited hands-on practice with advanced AI tools, leaving room for more practical application. In this manner I wanted to show you this AI integrated material

Exploring AI-assisted tools was relatively straightforward, thanks to clear demonstrations and user-friendly interfaces. However, understanding the ethical implications and long-term impacts of AI integration was more challenging, requiring deep critical thinking. My favorite task was designing a lesson plan incorporating AI tools; it was creative and directly applicable to teaching. My least favorite task was reviewing AI-related academic articles. It was insightful but dense and time-consuming. Incorporating more practical workshops and case studies could make the course even more impactful. Additionally, a module focused on troubleshooting AI tools would be valuable.Embrace curiosity and explore beyond the curriculum! Experiment with various AI tools and envision how they can transform your teaching approach. This course has equipped me with innovative teaching strategies, fostering a deeper understanding of technology’s role in education. I feel ready to create dynamic, tech-integrated learning experiences for my students.

Process of Creating Augmented/Virtual Reality Integrated Teaching Material

Incorporating Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) into educational materials has transformed the learning experience, making lessons more engaging and interactive. Recently, I developed an AR/VR integrated teaching material designed for high school English prep students (A2 level). The goal was to create an immersive activity where students could explore a city abroad while practicing language skills in a meaningful context. The process began with selecting a city abroad for virtual exploration. I chose Paris, given its rich history and easily accessible AR/VR resources. To start, I introduced two iconic landmarks: Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum. Pictures of these landmarks were placed on a handout, each linked to a 3D object and a 360-degree video. The aim was to let students virtually explore the landmarks while answering carefully crafted questions such as:

  • When was it built?

  • Who built it?

  • Would you visit this landmark? Why or why not?

This approach encouraged students to engage with the visuals actively while practicing question comprehension and sentence construction. I included a virtual museum visit. The Louvre Museum was featured with a linked 360-degree video. Students were prompted to explore the museum virtually and answer questions like:

  • Choose your favorite artifact and describe it.

  • Why did you choose this artifact?

  • What emotions does it evoke?

This activity not only expanded their vocabulary but also fostered critical thinking and emotional expression. I also added the link of the worksheet

To enrich cultural exposure further, I introduced croissant through an video. Students explored dishes like fish and chips and answered questions about their ingredients and historical significance. Challenges did arise during the creation process. Some students initially faced technical difficulties accessing the AR/VR content, which required troubleshooting and offering alternative links. Additionally, crafting questions that were both linguistically accessible and stimulating for A2 learners demanded thoughtful consideration. Despite these minor issues, the material proved highly suitable for the target audience. It successfully combined language practice with cultural exploration, visual learning, and creativity. Using 3D objects and 360-degree videos kept students visually engaged. Introducing landmarks, museums, and cuisine broadened cultural awareness also carefully crafted questions reinforced reading comprehension, sentence formation, and descriptive writing and AR/VR elements allowed students to explore and learn actively.

Overall, AR/VR integration enriched the language learning experience by making lessons immersive, memorable, and fun. It also provided a platform for creative expression and personal involvement, essential elements for meaningful language acquisition.

Developing Corpus-Based Teaching Materials 2

Hello everyone, welcome to my blog again. In this process, I didn't encounter witth so complicated problem because our teacher gave feedback to us. Firstly, I had arranged myself for the flipped language classroom. I had arranged my intonation pronounciation and my emphasis part.

I have worked to teach the topic as a briefly and clearly. While I was working on this process, my friends helped and showed me different ways and technics for the flipped language teaching. Teaching English with the flipped language teaching was very special experience for me. The thing that I mostly affected was creating a very huge time for the exercises in the classroom. In the other hand, While we are teaching English from the screen, I had to teach English very briefly and effectively. In the first part of the process, it was hard because I had to think about how am i going to teach about this topic in a very short time. But I dealt with this problem and I arranged very suitable video for teaching English. In this link you can see our Flipped language teaching video.:)

Developing Corpus-Based Teaching Materials

The first stage involved familiarizing myself with corpus linguistics principles, tools, and applications. I explored corpora the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA)  to understand their structure and functionality. I also engaged with concordance tools to analyze patterns, including collocations, frequency, and context-specific language usage.

I wanted to use collocations involving “make” and “do,” as these are commonly misused by learners. This phase demanded careful filtering of the vast data available, ensuring examples were not only relevant but also pedagogically appropriate.Using insights from the corpus, I created exercises that integrated real-world usage patterns. Activities included fill-in-the-blank tasks, matching. Each task was designed to promote both linguistic accuracy and communicative competence.

Also, another point of the corpus-based teaching is the sheer volume of data within a corpus posed challenge. While the richness of examples was valuable, narrowing down the information to what was most relevant for teaching objectives was a time-intensive process. Despite the challenges, the process of developing and implementing corpus-based materials proved to be a valuable professional development experience. In conclusıon, It was a different experince for me. I can think to integrate this approach in my next class.

Reflecting on My Experience with AI Tools in Language Learning

Recently, I had the unique opportunity to engage with AI tools, specifically utilizing an AI language model to aid in drafting and revising content. This experience has offered a profound glimpse into the capabilities of artificial intelligence in enhancing language learning and teaching. And There is 1 st draft and revised version in this link

One of the most significant benefits of using AI tools was the immediate and accurate feedback. When drafting my essay, the AI provided suggestions for improving sentence structure, ensuring consistent tense usage, and correcting punctuation errors. This instantaneous feedback loop is invaluable, as it allows for rapid improvement and learning. The AI also helped in maintaining engagement by suggesting variations in sentence structures, which is often a challenge in longer pieces of writing.

Moreover, the AI's vast database of knowledge was a treasure trove of information. Whenever I needed to verify facts or get additional context, the AI could provide detailed, reliable information within seconds. This aspect is particularly useful for both students and teachers who require quick access to accurate data.

The potential to integrate AI tools into teaching practice is immense. As a teacher, incorporating AI can transform the way we approach language learning. For instance, AI can be used to provide personalized feedback on students’ writing, highlighting specific areas for improvement and offering suggestions for refinement. This tailored approach can significantly enhance the learning experience, catering to individual student needs more effectively than traditional methods.

Furthermore, AI can assist in creating interactive and engaging lesson plans. By generating diverse examples and exercises, teachers can keep students engaged and challenged, promoting better retention and understanding. AI can also facilitate the development of adaptive learning platforms that adjust the difficulty of tasks based on the learner’s progress, ensuring a consistent and supportive learning curve.

The benefits of using AI in language learning are manifold. The most obvious advantage is the ability to provide instant, detailed feedback, which is crucial for language acquisition. AI can also serve as an ever-present tutor, available to assist students outside regular classroom hours, thus promoting continuous learning.

Additionally, AI can handle repetitive tasks such as grading, allowing teachers to focus more on interactive and high-value teaching activities. This shift can lead to more productive and enriching classroom experiences.

However, there are also drawbacks to consider. One significant concern is the potential for over-reliance on AI, which might diminish the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. There is also the risk of reduced human interaction, which is vital for developing communication skills and emotional intelligence. Furthermore, the quality of AI-generated feedback can vary, and there may be instances where the AI misinterprets the context or nuances of language, leading to incorrect suggestions.

In conclusion, my experience with AI tools has been enlightening and promising. The ability of AI to provide immediate, accurate, and personalized feedback can greatly enhance language learning. Integrating such tools into teaching practice could lead to more efficient and engaging learning experiences. However, it is essential to balance the use of AI with traditional teaching methods to ensure a holistic approach to language education. As we move forward, embracing AI while being mindful of its limitations will be key to unlocking its full potential in the realm of education.

The process of collaborative writing in terms of film review

Film reviews are a unique genre of writing that combines critical analysis, summary, and personal reflection. They aim to provide potential viewers with an understanding of the movie's content, themes, and overall quality. Here, I will demonstrate the production process of a film review using Spike Jonze's 2013 sci-fi romance-drama film "Her" as an example. And I shared the link of film review.

To capture the reader’s attention, a film review begins with a hook. This can be a thought-provoking question or a brief comparison to another well-known film. For "Her," the introduction could start with: "Can people fall in love with artificial intelligence? You might think of Blade Runner of 1982 but no, this movie is something else, in fact, a better way of looking at being a human. “This immediately engages the reader by posing an intriguing question and providing a point of reference.

After the hook, it's essential to provide basic information about the film and a concise summary of its plot. This includes mentioning the director, main cast, and a brief description of the storyline. For "Her": "Directed by Spike Jonze, Her is a sci-fi romance-drama movie. It has a fascinating cast with Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, and Scarlett Johansson (though we only hear her voice). Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) is a recently divorced man who is extremely sentimental and lives in solitude. He works for a company that writes letters for people to their loved ones. One day, he discovers a new OS (Operating System) designed to befriend users. As Theodore gets to know his OS, Samantha, they fall in love.  This summary provides enough context for the reader to understand the film's premise without revealing too much.

The heart of the review is the analysis, where the reviewer delves deeper into the film’s themes, characters, and technical aspects. For "Her," the review might explore how the film portrays loneliness and human connection in a futuristic setting: The world Theodore inhabits is set in the near future, marked by advanced technology and pervasive loneliness. Smartphones and Bluetooth earphones are ubiquitous, symbolizing how connected yet disconnected people are. Theodore, amidst the bustling city and towering skyscrapers, epitomizes this solitude. His relationship with Samantha, the OS, begins to fill the emotional void in his life, highlighting the film’s central theme: the search for connection. Discussing the film’s technical elements, such as cinematography and color palette, helps readers appreciate the visual and stylistic choices: "The film’s visual style is characterized by warm, low-contrast colors, creating an intimate and introspective atmosphere. The framing often isolates Theodore, even in dialogue scenes, emphasizing his loneliness. Interestingly, the film eschews CGI, opting for a natural look that enhances its emotional realism.

A good review also includes personal reflections, offering the reviewer’s perspective on the film’s impact and relevance. It is here that the reviewer can compare "Her" to other films and discuss its broader implications: "Is this a movie about artificial intelligence or being human? While Blade Runner raises similar questions, 'Her' clearly focuses on human relationships and emotions. The film uses AI to explore our deepest feelings and the complexities of love and grief. Despite its limited number of characters and a slow-paced plot, the movie's profound emotional depth makes it compelling. Finally, the conclusion should succinctly summarize the reviewer’s opinion and recommend the film (or not): "If you’ve read this review so far, I can tell you that we share similar tastes. I recommend watching 'Her' at the first opportunity. It’s a beautifully crafted exploration of love, loneliness, and what it means to be human."

The production process of a film review involves a careful balance of summary, analysis, and personal reflection. By providing an engaging introduction, concise plot summary, in-depth analysis, and thoughtful conclusion, the reviewer can effectively communicate their perspective and guide readers in their viewing choices. "Her" serves as an excellent example of a film that prompts deep reflection on human nature and the role of technology in our lives.

PROCESSING OF CREATING DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Starting a digital storytelling adventure was fascinating and thrilling at the same time. It all started with the goal of distilling a story into a maze of pixels and narratives that would captivate the audience's heart and head. It was like picking the ideal brush for a painting while deciding on the assignment and subject. I gave it a lot of thought before deciding on the theme of perseverance in the face of difficulty. It was a story that addressed the fundamental aspects of the human experience and provided a ray of hope for those facing difficulties in life. We worked as a group that's why it increased our ability to work. Also, I want to share our digital story with this link.

The creative process involved a careful balancing act between technology and imagination. With a combination of digital tools—Voice.ai for audio editing, Capcut for graphics and video compilation—every component was painstakingly created to complement the overall story. But there were plenty of obstacles in the way of this artistic journey. Technical issues frequently surfaced, putting patience and problem-solving abilities to the test. Furthermore, maintaining a delicate balance between visual appeal and narrative depth necessitated multiple modifications and refinements.

Formun Üstü

However, from the obstacles came priceless teachings. Because the process was iterative, I learned the value of resilience and adaptability—qualities that were reflected in the story I was trying to tell. Working together was also essential since peer input brought new insights and helped the project reach its peak.

In the end, the digital storytelling creation process transcended mere pixels and narratives, becoming a testament to the power of human ingenuity and perseverance. It was a journey that not only illuminated the path of storytelling but also enriched my own creative repertoire, leaving an indelible mark on the canvas of my digital endeavors.
